"Fuck reality" is a sentiment we all feel like expressing at one time or another and Smallville's Mats Frantzvaag has chosen to do it via four instantly infectious and cleverly constructed house tunes that banish daily mundanity as surely as salt kills slugs. Opener "Knitring" is grounded by beefy kicks over which a lovely melodic bassline and honey-sweet synth lines compete for your attention. "Breakaway" waits until its halfway mark before a swirl of benign banshee female vocal samples start trading yelps with a slightly more strident male one to the accompaniment of some Balearic hand percussion. "Rett Fra Levra" is as warm as a barbecue on a San Sebastián beach while closer "Shortie" breaks out the disco vibes until a whirling dervish of a diva's cries of "let me tell you" finally fade away into the atmospheric glitter they emerged from. This is as fine and varied a house EP as you'll hear all year. Yeah, fuck reality. Nic Brown
